Biography

Martin Kalina was born about 8 Nov 1850 in or near Kassa, Hungary (now Kosice, Slovakia).

He married Dorottya Elisabetha Stecz about 1880 in Hungary (now Slovakia). They had nine children in 12 years, all born in Hungary in or near Kassa, Hungary (now Kosice, Slovakia):

  • Jozsef (Joseph) (1881),[1]
  • Maria (1882),[2]
  • Marton Janos (Martin) (1883),[3]
  • Veronika (1885),[4]
  • Pal Peter (1887),[5]
  • Istvan Janos (1888),[6]
  • Marton Gyula (Martin George) (1890),[7]
  • John Andrew (1892),
  • Anna Constantia (Althea) (1893).[8]

Five of the children died in infancy: Maria died age 8 about 1900, Marton Janos died age 6 about 1889, Veronika died age 5 about 1900, Pal Peter died 1887 age 5 months, Istvan died 1890 age 2 years.

Before 1900, one of their sons, Joseph, left for the US to stay with Dorothy's sister Anna Copp and her family in Melrose, Massachusetts. In 1900, Martin left for Melrose. [9] In 1901, Dorothy left Antwerp with her 2 young children, John and Anna (Althea) and arrived NY, NY, on her way to Boston and her husband Martin in Melrose, Massachusetts. Son Martin Jr came to the US in 1903.

Martin declared his intention to become a US Citizen in 28 Mar 1908 in Boston. He worked as a varnisher.[10]

Two of the Kalina sons, Joseph and John, liked the name Copp (adopted by their cousin George Csopp who they stayed with in Melrose) so much that they both adopted this surname.

Martin and Dorothy lived in Melrose in 1910 with daughter Annie (Althea) where Martin worked as a shoe maker at the rubber shoe factory.[11] In 1920, Martin and Dorothy visited California where their 3 sons, Martin Kalina, John Copp and Joseph Copp had settled. Dorothy and Martin Sr were listed in census records for two of the sons.[12] [13] Dorothy and Martin Sr returned to Massachusetts later that year and Martin died in February 1921 in Melrose.[14] Besides his wife, he left 3 sons, 1 daughter and 6 grandchildren surviving.
