Biography

Patrick was probably born on 3 Mar 1823 in West County Mayo, Ireland.[1][2]
Patrick, as a youth, followed the trade of blacksmithing in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States in 1847, where he took up railroad work. For several years he lived at Chillicothe, Ross, Ohio, USA, working for the B&O Railway. From there he went to St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri, USA where he married Miss Mary Burke in 1860.[2][3]
In 1861 Patrick and Mary were living in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, United States,[2] and that is where their firstborn child, a son, was born. He was named Owen Patrick Kerrigan. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Kerrigan in 1866. Unfortunately, Mary Ann only lived to be two years old.[4] Another daughter, Sarah Maria Kerrigan, was born in 1868, who also died at just two years old.[5] Patrick and Mary had another daughter, Mary Ann Kerrigan, who was born in 1871. In total, Patrick and Mary had six children[2], but records have only been found for four of them. Only Owen and Mary Ann lived to adulthood.
In June of 1880, Patrick with his wife and two children, were living on Seventh Street, in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio. Patrick was employed as a "laborer", while Mary was keeping house. Owen was "working in a store" and Mary Ann was "at school".[6]
From the 1900 United States Census, it appears that Patrick was still living on Seventh Street in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, USA with his family. At that time, his wife, Mary and his daughter Mary Ann were living with him. Also in the home were Mary Kerrigan (1890) and George Kerrigan (1894), Patrick and Mary's grandchildren from their son Owen. No occupation is shown for Patrick or Mary, but Mary Ann was working as a "dressmaker" and Mary, their granddaughter, was at school.[3]
Patrick and Mary were caring for their two grandchildren, Mary and George, as a result of the death of their mother Anna Flannigan Kerrigan in 1896. Their father, Owen, was unable to care for them while working so these two children lived with his parents, while his other two children lived with his deceased wife's parents.[7]
Patrick worked for a number of years with Charles S. Green, who operated a portion of the Gaylord Mill. In his later years, as he became too feeble for physical work, Patrick conducted a home dairy.[2]
In the end, Patrick was "bedfast" for about three weeks, so his death was not unexpected. He died on 19 Jul 1905. His funeral was held at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Portsmouth. Father J. E. McGuirk officiated.[2]. He was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, USA.[1]
