Alexander was born in 1902. He was the son of David Kinloch and Elinor Lucy Bromley Davenport. He attended Eton College.
He fought in the Second World War. He gained the rank of Major in the Grenadier Guards.
He succeeded his father as the 12th Baronet Kinloch, of Gilmerton (est.1686 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia) on 27 October 1944.
He married (1) Alexandra Dalziel, daughter of Frederick Young Dalziel and Emily Key Hoffman, on 10 September 1929. They had 2 daughters.
He and Alexandra were divorced in 1945.
