Edward was the last child born to Hiram Kirk and Minerva Wilson. His mother died before 1850.

His father remarried in 1851. Only three years later he was killed when thrown from a horse. At that time the siblings split up. Edward's stepmother remarried before 1860.
The following entry MAY be for the same Edward: 1860 Census: Edward W Kirk age 11 b MO in household of G F Germon and Miranda Germon, Nashville Township, Barton, MO. [2]
A Wilson Kirk married Flora Hull 28 Apr 1880 in Nodaway County, Missouri.[3] According to the 1880 Census, however, this Willis Kirk was born in Indiana and his parents were born in Ohio.
