Birth
Joseph, the son of Thomas Kitchin and his wife Mary, née Bardy, who had been married at Holbeck, Leeds, Yorkshire, on 19 June 1864,^[1][2] was born in 1868, his birth being registered at York, Yorkshire, in the second quarter of that year.^[3]

Baptism
Joseph was baptized at the church of St Margaret in the City of York, Yorkshire, on 2 January 1870.^[4][5]

1871 Census
The 2 April 1871 census records Joseph living with his parents at Navigation Road, York.^[6]

1881 Census
The 3 April 1881 census records Joseph living with his parents and siblings at 47 Northgate, Darlington.^[7]
