Biography

Bevis (Bogo) de Knovill alias de Cnovyle[1] aka Bogo de Knouill[2]

Bevis was married by 1273 to Joan[2] who was deceased before 6 July 1306.[1]

Bevis was the father of:

  1. Bevis, son and heir, said to be aged 24 or 30 in 1307;[1]

Baron de Knoville

in 1 Edward I [1273], an extent and appraisement was made of the third part of the manor of Parva Teynton, which Matilda, who was the wife of Robert Walerand, claimed in dower in the court before the king's Justices at Westminster against Bogo de Knouill and his wife, Joan; Bogo and Joan called to warranty the lord the King, keeper of the body and lands of Robert, son of William Walerand, grandson and heir of Robert Walerand.[2]

A Writ regarding Bevis (Bogo) de Knovill alias de Cnovyle was issued on 6 July, 35 Edward I [1307], after which Inquisitions found the heir of Bevis was his son, Bevis aged 24 or 30, and Bevis held in:[1]

  • Wiltshire, the manor of Dicherygge, held of the king, by reason of lands which were of Roger le Bigod, sometime marshal of England, now in the king's hand, by service of 1/2 knight's fee except a fifth part; and it is of the inheritance of Joan (deceased) late the wife of Bevis;
  • Marches of Wales, the manor of Marthern, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Strugull, now in the king's hand, by service of a Welsh knight's fee;
  • Gloucester, tenants in Gravenhull; in Little Teynton land and a capital messuage held of Alan Plockenet; and land and a capital messuage and wood in the forest of Dene, held in chief of John de Ferrariis by socage.

He married, 1stly, before October 1273, Joan, daughter of Cecily (daughter of William WALERAND and) aunt of John WALERAND. He married, 2ndly, circa 1276, Alianore, widow of Robert LESTRANGE, and daughter and coheir of William DE WARENNE, of Blanchminster (Whitchurch), with whom he had a moiety of Whitchurch. By her he had no issue. She was dead in 1306, and was buried at High Ercall, where her tomb is to be seen. He died before 6 July 1307, date of writ for his inquisition. [CP VII:345-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] [3]

He was summoned to Parliament from 24 June 1295 to 3 November 1306, by writs directed Bogoni de Knoville, whereby he is held to have become LORD KNOVILL.

06 Jun 1282: "Pardon to Bogo de Knovill of the forfeiture belonging to the king, for the evasion of thieves in his custody for the time that he was sheriff in the counties of Salop and Stafford".[4]
