Herbert was born on 3 December 1894 in Manchester, Massachusetts. His father was a teamster at the time.[1][2] As of 1900, he lived with his family in Manchester.[3] As of 1910, he was living with his family on Brooks Street in Manchester and working as a laborer.[4]
He married Georgina Reid on 21 December 1916 in Cambridge. He resided at 56 Joy Street at the time in Somerville and was working as a fireman in the Navy, which he had joined in about 1915[2][5] or 1917.[6] As of 1917, he was working as a machinist at Knowell Worthington Black Company in Cambridge.[2] As of 1920, he was living with his wife, son, and in-laws at 24 Kensington Avenue in Somerville. He had attended school within that year and was not employed,[7] though he was listing himself as a machinist again by May of that same year.[8]
Following the death of his wife in 1921, Herbert married Elizabeth Venezia on 10 June 1925 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire.[9] As of 1930, he was living at 204 Breeders Lane in Revere with his wife and two of his children. He was working as a chauffeur at the post office.[10] As of 1940, he was living with his family at 3 Genoa Street in Revere and was no longer working.[11]
Herbert was of medium height and slender build, with brown eyes and hair. As of 1918, he suffered from a leaking heart valve.[2] He served for a time on the U.S.S. Virginia.[12]
He passed away on 17 September 1952 in Revere.[6][13]
