In August 1875, he conducted the wedding service for his sister Ann's wedding to James Lydiatt in Hamilton.
In 1877 it was his turn, as he married Caroline Ward in Welland. His brother Ebenezer stood witness at the wedding. Caroline Draper of the U.S. was the other witness.
In 1881, John and Elizabeth were lodging with the family of Richard Harrison, the druggist in Dunnville and a supporter of the Methodist Church. By 1891 they have moved to Toronto and his niece Mary Hayden is living with them.
Methodist minister, he conducted wedding service for his nephew Harry Hayden's 1894 wedding to Annie Harland.
Rev. J E Lanceley died of heart disease in 1900. He is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto with his wife and three daughters.
