Biography

Birth and Origin

Charles was born 3 (or 8) April 1830 at Ballinasloe. He is the son of Thomas Edmund Langley and Annie Fridzwise Seymour (Seymons). [1]

NB Mother's surname is Seymour NOT Seymons. For instance "CHARLES SEYMOUR LANGLEY, 1855-56, son of Thomas E. Langley, Esq., by his wife Fridzwide Seymour, was b. at Ballinasloe, April 8, 1830."[2]

1854 Bachelor of Arts and Div. Test (First Class Honours)
1859 M.A.
1864 B.D.
In 1868 he awarded Doctor of Diviity from Trinity College of Dublin (see Cole for full academic honours) [3][4]

Curate St Michael's, Limerick 1854
Curate at Taney, dio Dublin 1855
Rector at St Mary's Clonmel, Co Tipperary 1856-1861
1861, to the Rectory of Kilworth, Diocese of Cloyne.
He was subsequently appointed a Canon of Cloyne Cathedral, and a Rural Dean. i.e. Preb. of Ballyhea, in St Colman's Cathedral, Cloyne[5] [6]

While at Kilworth Charles undertook restoration and improvemtns of the CoI church (now The Village Arts Centre, Kilworth, County Cork):

"This church, built in the 1720s on the site of an earlier church, was considerably altered and repaired in 1885. The chancel, stained-glass windows and spire were added at this time and the renovations were undertaken by Rev. Charles Seymour Langley who was rector of the parish at the time. It makes a notable addition to the main square of the town."[7]

Marriage and Family

Rev. C. S. Langley married Miss Maria Aston (daughter of David Aston, Esq., M.D., of Dublin, and of his wife Maria Catharine, dau. of R. Watkins, Esq., of Prospect House, Roebuck) 30 Sep 1854 at Abbeyleix, Queens, Ireland.[8] [9]

They had 3 children:

  • Mary Langley (bapt. T. C.), d. Jan. 1, 1892
  • Fridzwide Henrietta Langley
  • Charles Seymour Langley MD b. c 1869 m. Katherine, elder daughter of Capt John Brazier Creagh R.N. and has issue Dorothy Kathleen Emily Creagh[10] [11]d. 09 Jun 1931 at Seattle, King, Washington[12]


Death

Canon Langley died 9 April 1885 aged 55 years.[13]

Will Calender - Letters of Administration for Reverend Charles Seymour Langley late of the Glebe, Kilworth, Cork D.D. d 9 April 1885 at same place, granted at the Principal Registry to Maria Langley of same place, the widow. Effects L4,920 16S 3d[14]

NB Charles could be connected to the Tipperary Langleys of Ballyduff, Brittas Castle, Archertown etc & therefore distant cousin to the first two Bishops of Bendigo, Victoria- brothers Henry Archdall Langley & John Douse Langley.
