Matilda (Lawrence) Hammond was born in Merton, Surrey, England.

Matilda Celia Lawrence was born in 1856 in Merton, Surrey, England to John Lawrence and Katherine (Hancock) Lawrence. Her birth was registered in Croydon, Surrey in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Hancock.[1]

Matilda Celia Lawrence, daughter of John & Katherine, was christened on 7 Oct 1860 in Merton.[2] Four of her siblings were christened on the same day: Amy (born 1851), Kate Selina (1852), John (1853), and Emily (1860).

In 1861 Matilda Lawrence (age 4, Scholar) lived at Pickle in Merton with her father John (36, Silk Printer), mother Katherine (34), and four siblings: Amy (7[9], Scholar), Kate (8, Scholar), John (7, Scholar), and Emily (1).[3]

In 1871 Matilda E[C] Laurence (age 14) lived in Mitcham, Surrey with her father John (47), mother Katherine (46), brother John (17), and sister Emily (10).[4]

Matilda Celia Lawrence (age 20, Spinster, daughter of John Lawrence) and John Hammond (age 24, Bachelor, son of James Hammond) were married on 27 Jun 1877 in Mitcham.[5] The marriage was registered in Croydon in the second quarter of the year.[6]

Matilda and John had four children:

  1. Amy Celia (Hammond) Skelton (1879-1954)
  2. Alfred Carl Hammond (1882-1955)
  3. Edward John Hammond (1887-)
  4. Willie Arthur Hammond (1892-1973)

In 1881 Matilda C Hammond (age 23) lived at Belvedere Cottages in Wimbledon, Surrey with her husband John (27, Carpenter) and daughter Amy C (2).[7]

In 1891 Matilda C Hammond (age 34) lived at Walnut Tree Road in Wimbledon with her husband John (38, Joiner) and three children: Amy C (12), Alfred Care (3[8]), and Edw John (3), as well as lodger Albert N Caff (28, Watchmaker).[8]

In 1901 Matilda C Hammond (age 44) lived at Church Road in Wimbledon with her husband John (48, Joiner) and three sons: Alfred C (18, Bootmaker), Edward J (13), and Willie A (9).[9]

Matilda's husband passed away in 1908:

  • "HAMMOND John of 5 Belvedere-cottages Church-road Wimbledon Surrey died 28 June 1908 Probate London 17 November to Matilda Celia Hammond widow. Effects £280 10s. 6d."[10]

In 1911 Matilda Celia Hammond (age 54) lived at Belvedere Cottages Church [Road] in Wimbledon with two boarders: Henry Jacques (35, Grocer Manager Provision Retail) and Albert Edward Stevens (21, Domestic Gardener).[11]

In 1921 Matilda Celia Hammond (age 65) lived in Wimbledon.[12]

Matilda C Hammond passed away in 1932, aged 75 years. Her death was registered in Kingston, Surrey in the first quarter of the year.[13]
