Samuel was working as a die sinker in Birmingham in 1841. He marries Zillah Collins in late 1845 in West Bromich and they move to the US sometime between 1848 and 1853 [based on the birth dates and locations of Marie and Annie].
He was mustered to the 161st Infantry in the Union Army on 14 Aug 1862 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA and he served in Florida [Fort Jefferson] and was promoted to rank of corporal. He left the army in 1865 and moved to Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa.
