Biography

George Lear was born in 1858 in Shillingford, Devon, England to John Lear and Caroline Radford (Hedgeman) Lear. His birth was registered in St Thomas, Devon in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Hedgman.[1]

In 1861 George Lear (age 2) lived at Dunsford in Shillingford with his father John (36, Farmer of 60 2 Acres Employing 3 Men), mother Caroline (27), brother John (3), sister Caroline (0), and four servants: Kitty Pall (18, House Servant), Helen Salley (17, House Servant), Thomas Pall (22, Plough Boy), and Dannel Greenslade (13, Plough Boy).[2]

In 1881 George Lear (age 23, Bakers Assist) lived at Tavistock Cres in Kensington, London in the household of his employer Thomas Kingston (47, Baker).[3]

George Lear married Elizabeth Dimond in 1884. The marriage was registered in Kensington in the third quarter of the year.[4]

  • George and Elizabeth were cousins through their mothers, who were half-sisters.

George and Elizabeth had four children:

In 1891 George Lear (age 32, Baker) lived at Lordship Terrace in Tottenham, Middlesex with his wife Elizabeth D (35) and three children: George (4), Emily D (2), and Carrie D (0), as well as servant Ellen Twaite (23, Domestic Servant).[5]

In 1901 George Lear (age 42, Baker & Confectioner) lived at Rathcoole Parade in Hornsey, Middlesex with his wife Elizabeth D (44) and three children: George (14), Emily D (12), and Dorothy C (10), as well as five boarders/employees: Rose Wendon (25, Baker's Counterman), Maude K Stockwell (22, Sub Post Office Counter Clerk), Kate Richards (23, Domestic Servant), Samuel Perry (19, Journeyman Baker), and Sidney Burd (17, Baker's Roundsman).[6]

In 1911 George Lear (age 52, Farmer) lived in North Tawton, Devon with his wife Bessie (55), son George (24, Farmer's Son Working on Farm), and daughter Carrie (20, Farmer's Daughter Worker).[7]

George Lear passed away in 1937, aged 78 years. His death was registered in Winchcomb, Gloucestershire in the first quarter of the year.[8] An obituary for Mr George Lear of Brookfield was published in the Gloucestershire Echo on 23 Feb 1937.[9]

  • In 1939 George's widow and two children lived at Brook Field in Bishop's Cleeve, Cheltenham district, Gloucestershire.
