Obituary

MRS. GARBER DIES LATE WEDNESDAY
ONE OF THE OLDEST PIONEERS OF EMMET COUNTY CAME IN 1876
Was Devout Christian And Happy In Home And Community. Funeral At Bliss Saturday

Mrs. Sarah L. Garber, one of the oldest pioneer residents of Emmet county, passed away late Wednesday at her home at 417 Wachtel avenue. She had been ill for about three years and for several months had slowly grown weaker until the end came.
Mrs. Garber was a devout Christian woman, sharing and helping in all the early life of the regions where she resided. Of artistic ability, a lover of all the things of beauty in the great out of doors, she maintained a cheerful home life, even through her long illness.
Born in Elkhart, Indiana, July 30, 1850, Mrs. Garber resided there for some time and then moved to Kent county, Michigan, where she married on January 11, 1870, to Henry C. Garber. Six years later they moved to Cross Village and soon moved to a farm in Bliss township. Following the death of Mr. Garber the family moved to Petoskey.
Three sons and two daughters survive her, Donald L. Garber, Olin Garber and Ellis Garber and Mrs. Maud Adams, of Petoskey and Delia Allison of Grand Rapids. Five brothers and one sister also survive her, Abraham Leatherman, Muskegon Heights; Nelson Leatherman, Hinsdale, Illinois; and John, Aaron and Amos Leatherman of Dutton, Michigan; and Mrs. Mary Brubaker, Orange, Calif. There are three grand children and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Garber was a member of the First Christian church and Rev. J. N. Booth will conduct the funeral services, assisted by Rev. G. A. Weaver, long time friend of the family. There will be a prayer service at the home Saturday afternoon at 1 and the funeral services will be held from the Bliss U. B. church at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afteroon. Burial will be in the family lot in Bliss cemetery.[1]
