He married Sophia Ball on 6 February 1832 at Madron, Cornwall[3]. They had at least four children.
In 1841 he was living with his wife Sophia (30), three children - Sophia (8), Joseph (4) and James (2) - and three female servants at Emanuel's View, Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire[9][10]. He was a cotton spinner aged 35 born in Lancashire. In 1851 he was living with his wife Sophia (44), four children - Sophia (17), Joseph (13), James (11) and Charlotte (9) - and two general female servants at 60 Peter Street, Southport, North Meols, Ormskirk, Lancashire[11][12]. He was a coal proprietor aged 46 born at Oldham, Lancashire.
By 1861 the family had moved to East Dean, Eastbourne, Sussex[13]. James was now a farmer of 1454 acres employing 32 men and 16 boys. Also in his household were his wife Sophia (51), their children - Joseph (23), James (21) and Charlotte (19) - and two female house servants. Daughter Sophia had married and left home.
James Lees migrated from England to New Zealand.
His sons, Joseph and James, sailed in April 1863 from Gravesend on the Motoaka[14]. He followed with his wife and daughter Charlotte in July 1864 on the Chile, reaching Oamaru on 25 November. James set up a flour mill.
In 1880 he was a gentleman living at Tees Street, Section 1 Block 28 Oamaru, being registered on the Oamaru Electoral Roll[15] as was his son James.
James died on 25 January 1882 at "The Mount", Tees Street, Ōamaru[16]. He was buried in Ōamaru Old Cemetery, Ōamaru[17].
