Biography

John was born about 1839. He was the son of Peter Lesslie and Louisa Gardiner. He passed away about 1903. [1]

A large concourse of friends followed the body to the last resting place bringing with them numerous floral offerings as tribute to the dead. The last rites of the Catholic Church were said by Father JJudge of St. Stephen's Church. When the ceremony was concluded the flowers were placed gently upon the grave and the sorrowing concourse departed mourning the loss forever of the one whom it was a privilege to know in life. The number of offerings banked on the resting place were mute reminders of the esteem Mr. Lesslie was held in.

Mr. Lesslie was a native of New Orleans and lived her all his life. Born in this city sixty-four years ago he secured common school education and started out in life quite early. Thirty years ago he entered the employ of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He remained with that company up until the time of his death filling positions of trust and responsibility. Thirty seven years ago Mr. Lesslie was married to Miss Mollie J Bryant. The union was a happy one. Mrs. Lesslie ... six children. Walter S, who resides in St. Louis, Edward J, William H, Louise, Stella, and Nan Lesslie survive the deceased. .. can't read the last sentence.

From a tattered newspaper clipping in my great great grandmother's bible. The bible belonged to Louise Gardner Lesslie, then to Mary Jane Davis Lesslie (daughter in law), then to Lola Florence Lesslie Wall (my grandmother), then to me, Laura Lesslie.
