Mary (Lewis) Clarke was born in Wales.

Biography

Mary was born in the third quarter of 1854 and baptised at St Elli parish church Llanelly on the 28th August 1854. Note that Family Search has the 21st August 1854, this is incorrect as the date written in the actual register book is the 28th August 1854.

She was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Esther Goulstone. Mary's father was a saddler by trade and also ran the White Hart in Water Street Llanelly. Mary can be found living here with her parents in the 1861 and 1871 census returns.

On January 19th 1875, Mary married David Clarke a stonemason originally from Carmarthen but living in Llanelly at the time of the marriage. The marriage took place at All Saints church in the parish of Llanelly. Both Mary and her husband David signed the marriage register indicating that they could both read and write.

In the 1881 census, they and their family of three children are living at 6 Magazine Row in Carmarthen. David was brought up in Magazine Row where his father ran a tea and grocery business. His mother is still running the business at number 9 Magazine row at the time of the census.

Mary and David had five children in total, David Henry; Esther Sarah; William Charles; George Powell and Thomas Edwin.

Sadly at the age of 31, Mary passed away in December 1885 and was buried on the 29th December at St Davids parish church in Carmarthen. The church was very close to her home at Magazine Row.

Following Mary's death, the five children were split up with two being sent to live with their maternal grandparents in Llanelly at the White Hart, and three living in Carmarthen with David's sister at 9 Magazine Row.
