DEATH OF CAPT. LIDDELL’S FATHER. – The Hon. and Rev. Robert Liddell, M.A., for 30 years vicar of St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, died at his residence in New Cavendish-street, London, on Friday evening at 9.30 p.m. He was the fifth son of Thomas Henry, first Lord Ravensworth, and was born in 1808. He was educated at All Souls’ College, Oxford, and graduated M.A. in 1834, and was fellow of All Souls’ from 1834 to 1836. He was ordained by the Bishop of Rochester in 1834, and in 1836 was appointed vicar of Barking, Essex. He was appointed vicar of St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, with St. Barnabas, Pimlico, in 1851, which he held till 1881, when he retired on account of increasing age. He was highly respected by the parishioners for his piety and benevolence. Mr. Liddell married, January 26, 1836, Emily Anne Charlotte, eldest daughter of the late Hon. and Rev. Gerald Valerian Wellesley, niece of the Duke of Wellington, and sister of the late Dr. Wellesley, Dean of Windsor. By that lady, who died in October, 1876, he leaves issue three sons. The eldest son, Arthur Thomas, is married to Sophia Harriet, second daughter of Sir Thomas Wathen Waller, Bart. The second son, Capt. Gerald George, late 23rd Fusiliers, married Agatha, eldest daughter and co-heir of the late Admiral Walcott, M.P. for Christchurch (and resided at Winkton house, where Mrs. Liddell died a few years ago); and secondly married Elsa, daughter of Mr. Charles Reynolds, late of Carshalton, Surrey. The third son, Charles John is a senior assistant librarian in the British Museum. The funeral took place on Wednesday. There was an early celebration at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, at half-past eight, at which there was a large gathering. The body was placed in the chancel with six tall tapers burning by it, the coffin being almost hidden from view by the number of choice wreaths and crosses of white flowers. The body was taken in an open hearse to the South Western Railway for Woking, where the interment took place in the cemetery of the Necropolis Company. – The World says: The numerous friends of the Hon. and Rev. Robert Liddell, especially his old parishioners of St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge, will be deeply grieved to hear of his death, which followed a painful operation for cancer in the face. Both at All Souls’ and at St. Paul’s “Bob” Liddell enjoyed a large measure of popularity, and in his earlier days he was one of the pioneers of the High Church movement. Since his retirement, in spite of increasing years and deafness, he has been often heard of as a successful angler in Scotch waters. He spent last autumn as usual amongst the salmon, and his cheery presence and good stories will be missed in many country houses north of the Tweed. He was in his eightieth year, and had the reputation of being one of the most kindly and benevolent of men.
