Margaret is born Anna Lima on 10 October 1907 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Peter Lima and Providenza Aiello Lima.[1] Margaret has an older sister who is called Anna, born Antonina in 1904. Margaret's obituary claims she was born Margaret Lima in Utica, where the family later lives.

In the 1920 federal census of Utica, NY, taken 12 January, Peter Lima heads a household at 920 Jay St. Peter is 51 (b. 1868), born in Italy, and immigrated in 1898. His wife, Prudence, 42 (b. 1877), also from Italy, immigrated the same year. Their children at home are Joseph, 19 (b. 1900), Salvatore, 18 (b. 1901), Anna, 16 (b. 1903), Rose, 15 (b. 1904), and Maggie, 13 (b. 1906). All were born in New York. Peter is a grocer. His sons are clerks in a grocery store. Anna is a mill hand in a knitting mill.[2]

According to Peter's great-granddaughter, he is a bootlegger during Prohibition.[3] His death in 1934 is attributed to his alleged traffic in alcohol.[4] [4]

In 1928, Margaret's brother, Joseph, gets into an argument with his wife, Nellie, that escalates to a shootout involving the family of Rosario Gambino, who is married to Margaret's paternal cousin. Their father shoots Rosario, who dies from his wounds. It's reported at the time that Joseph's wife returns to Brooklyn with her brother.

In the 1930 federal census of Utica, NY, taken 6 April, Peter Lima, 61, heads a household at 922 Lansing St. He owns his home, worth $4500. His wife is Prudence, 52. Both were born in Italy. Their children at home are Anna, 23, Rose, 21, and Margaret, 19, all born in New York. Peter immigrated in 1900 and is a grocery store clerk. Prudence immigrated in 1902.[5]

Her mother, Prudence dies on 29 May 1934.[3]

In November, her father is shot, execution style, in his automobile with Dominick Aiello, Prudence's brother.[6]

Following Peter's death, his son, Joseph, goes to prison. His wife and daughters return to his in-laws in Brooklyn in 1938, bringing Margaret with them.[3][7]

In the 1940 federal census of Brooklyn, NY, taken 9 April, Joseph Lima and Steve Coniglio head neighboring homes at 550 Hicks St. Steve is Joseph and Margaret's paternal uncle by marriage. Their uncle Natale lives around the corner on Hicks St.

Joseph, 39 (b. 1901), who answers the census, was born in New York. His wife Nellie, 35 (b. 1905), was born in Italy. Their children Peter, 14 (b. 1926), and Prudence, 8 (b. 1932), and Joseph's sister, Margaret, 32 (b. 1908), were all born in NY. Joseph is the proprietor of a fruit and vegetable retail store.[8]

Joseph arranges for Margaret to marry Antonio Mangano, also called Anthony, around 1944. They make their home in Brooklyn.[3][7]

Margaret and Anthony have three children: Prudence, Anthony, and Rosa.[7]

Margaret's sister, Rose, is married to Joseph Pulia on 21 June 1958. Rose's matron of honor is her sister, Margaret, and Joseph's best man is Margaret's husband, Anthony Mangano.[3][9]
