Biography

Sarah Alice Lionberger was born on September 5, 1869, in Carthage, Illinois, to Emanuel Lionberger and Mary Ann Browning. She had four siblings: John, William, Mary, and Emma, who were all born in Illinois or Missouri. Sarah grew up in Carthage and Le Sieur, Missouri, where her father worked as a farmer.

On June 3, 1889, Sarah married Charles Henry Young in Arkansas. They had five children in 10 years: Paul Holden, born in 1890; Maybelle Alice, born in 1892; Lillie Irene, born in 1896; Benjamin Emanuel, born in 1897; and Charles Cyril, born in 1900. Sarah and Charles lived in various places in Arkansas, Missouri, and Michigan, where Charles worked as a farmer.

Sarah enjoyed gardening and traveling with her husband. She also witnessed many historical events in her lifetime, such as the two world wars, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, and the moon landing. She also experienced the loss of her parents, who died in 1906 and 1895; her husband, who died in 1918; and her daughter Lillie Irene, who died in 1925.

Sarah passed away on January 26, 1934, in El Dorado, Arkansas, at the age of 64. She was buried in Kansas City, Missouri. She left behind a loving family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who remembered her fondly.
