A lengthy and descriptive newspaper article announcing the engagement of this Alice Lishman to Lieutenant, Henry Merriam, 3rd artillery, US Army. This record also says that Alice was the daughter of William Lishman, a prominent merchant of Hololulu, (Hawaii). This record also says Miss Lishman "is an extremely beautiful young woman, charming and accomplished. She has seen considerable of society in Honolulu, where she is an acknowledged belle." ^[1]

A Colorado Statewide Marriage Index record for the marriage of this Alice M. Lishman to Henry M. Merriam in Denver, Colorado, December 7, 1901. Nothing else is given about the couple except their names.^[2]

CENSUS':

The 1910 US Census of Monmouth, New Jersey; Sandy Hook Peninsula, Fort Hancock finds this Alice L at the age of 28yrs old, married for 9yrs, born in Hawaii Territory. She is living there on Fort Hancock on the Front Road line of quarters for commissioned officers with her 32yr old U.S. Army officer/husband, Henry M. Merriam, two sons, 7yr old Henry L. and 3yr old William M. and two servants.^[3]

The 1930 US Census of Port Townsend, Jefferson, Washington finds this Alice M. at the age of 49yrs old, given as born on the Hawaiian island and married since age 20yrs old. She is living there in Port Townsend on Mountain View Rd. with her husband, 53yr old husband, Henry M. Merriam and their 22yr old son, William M. Merriam.^[4]

The 1940 US Census of Port Townsend, Jefferson, Washington finds this Alice L. Merriam at the age of 59yrs old, born in Hawaii. She is living there in Port Townsend on Jackson (St.?), with her 62yr old husband, Henry M. Merriam and a 67yr old, male, Chinese cook, Charlie Ling.^[5]
