William Long was born in Yorkshire, England.
William was born in 1905[1] in Etton, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of George Long and Hannah Scott. The family lived in Etton, where William's father was a farm foreman.[2] In 1921 William worked as a farm horseman for the Beachell family at Wallis Grange, Etton.[3]

William married Ivy Miriam Roebuck in 1931.[4] At the time of the 1939 Register the family lived in High Gardham, Yorkshire, where William was a farm stockman and Ivy carried out "unpaid domestic duties."[5]

William died in 1962 at the age of 56.[6]
