William was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1842, the son of Jeremiah and Louisa (Scott) Lord.[1] In 1850, he was living in Malden, Mass., with his parents and 3 older brothers.[2]
He enlisted to serve in the Civil War on June 29, 1861, when he was 19 years old. He mustered in as a Private to Company C of the Massachusetts 13th Infantry on July 16 of that year. He was discharged at Boston, Mass., on August 1, 1864.[3]
Just before the war, at the time of the 1860 census, William had been a boarder in the home of William & Elizabeth Rayner and their family in Stoneham, Mass.[4] When he returned from military service, William married Mary Rayner, a daughter of William and Elizabeth. They settled in Malden, where William worked as an express messenger.
William died in 1900 when he was 57 years old.[5] He is buried at the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.[6]
