Biography

Arthur Alfred Lowe was born to Edwin William Lowe and Ada Catherine Smith in 1904.

Arthur married Joyce Stitt in Queensland on 24th May, 1932^[1]. They had three sons and a daughter^[2]-.

Arthur died in 1963^[3] and is buried in the Gladstone cemetery^[4].

Julv 22. Alleging that he had received no notice of the termination of his services, Arthur Alfred Lowe, salesman, of North Rockhampton, sued A. E. Warneke, of the Gladstone Fruit Markets, Gladstone, for four pounds — a week and two days' wages in lieu of notice, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Warneke denied indebtedness. The plaintiff conducted his own case. Mr. D. P. Carey appeared for the defendant. Lowe said he was engaged by the defendant in Gladstone on April 11 last. Warneke advanced him £2 to come to Rockhampton, and witness took over the Rockhampton branch of the business. He received £3 5s. a week up to July 2. Two days later Warneke came to Rockhampton and terminated his services without notice. On June 17 Warneke informed him that the business was 'not going too well' and he and the girl were asked to work week about: but he did not give any intimation that witness's services were to be dispensed with. Warneke said that on June 23 he informed Lowe that if the business did not improve in a week he would close up the shop. On July 4 he told Lowe that he was closing until September and gave him the offer of running the shop for himself. Lowe declined this offer. He owed Lowe wages for July 4, but against that Lowe owed him 30s of the original advance to come to Rockhampton and 30s. for unemployment relief tax. Mrs. Lowe, wife of the plaintiff, gave evidence of waiting with her husband on the night of June 23 for Warneke. The defendant did not put in an appearance. The Magistrate entered judgment for the plaintiff, with 7s. 6d. costs.
