Biography

Johann Heinrich Lowekamp is shown as a Heuerling (farm laborer) from Moselerberg in his marriage record at the church in Buer. The record, 12 April 1826, names his parents Johann Heinrich Lowekamp and Clara Elisabeth Moseler and gives his age as 28 years.

Researcher, Buth, found Clara Elisabeth Moseler as the mother of a child, John Heinrich, 8 May 1798. The father was Johann Christian Droste, but the child was named Moseler.

The researcher found no marriage record for parents, Johann Heinrich and Clara Elisabeth Lowekamp, but she did find children born to them as early as 1803.

Johann Heinrich died 28 Feb 1846 in Hustette (Hustadt), Hanover. His widow, Marie, and four children immigrated to America.

The Immigrant Lovercamp Children

Each of the immigrant children were found in birth records of the church in Buer (Aug 2002). The birthdays of each are slightly different than those found in later American records. Maria Louisa, the daughter and the oldest did not travel with the rest of the family. In the Buer church records she is shown as Clara Elisabeth.Lowekamp.

Maria Louisa, was born 9 November, 1827. Louisa married Henry Ziekerman, an established farmer and stone mason in Ceasar Creek Township. They married November 15, 1848. Henry and Louisa had two daughters and a son. But, Louisa died before her son was a month old. She died in 1857. Henry remarried and had additional children. In 1905, Henry died when he was more than 90 years of age. There are Siekermans at St. John's to this day. (It was perhaps a related Siekerman who died in 1861).

The next oldest child was Casper Henry , born Sep 6, 1832. Casper and his younger brothers lived with his mother and step father after his mother remarried July 1849. His step father, Henry Lubert, was a farmer. Casper married Eliza Stegemiller, October 9, 1855. With her father, Ernst Henry Stegemiller, Eliza had immigrated from Germany two years earlier than Casper. Casper and Eliza (or Louisa) had twelve children. The records as St. John's include some of their children. Some baptisms and confirmations occurred at a location near Bear Creek (Switzerland Co.) or St Paul's. Casper moved to Ohio Co., IN in August 1872, buying property that was beside that of his father-in-law, John H. Stegemiller. Casper's brother Ernst had moved to Ohio Co, a few years before. Casper moved to MO in 1887.

John Henry was born 8 Jan, 1838. He was just thirteen when Henry Lubbert died (Jan 16, 1851) and Marie Elsebein married the third time (Mar 26,1851). John Henry probably lived in the home of his new step father, Henry Kleine. After 1851, the Kleines aren't found in records of St. John's. Since Irene Cook relays tradition that Marie Elsebin lived near Lawrenceburg, and since John Henry is buried in Rising Sun Indiana, it is pretty clear that he moved with them. John Henry died Sep 13, 1860 at age 23. His burial records give no indication that he was married.

Ernst Henry was the youngest, born 26 Sept, 1845 in Germany. He was confirmed at St. John's in 1860. On Oct 24, 1867, he married Caroline Kotter, also a recent immigrant. According to the marriage record, he was known as Andy. This nickname was also used by Casper's grandson (Ernest Henry Jr.) In that same year, 1867, Ernst bought property in Pike TWP, Ohio County. With the move to Ohio Co. Lovercamps were no longer included in the records at St. John's. Ernst moved to IL in 1881.
