Biography

Patrick was born on 6 February 1864 in Tuilsce, County Roscommon, Ireland. He was the son of Patrick Lowry and Bridget Ryan.

He immigrated to Australia in 1882 aboard the sailing ship “Western Monarch”, disembarking on 9 August 1882 at Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, after a voyage lasting 17 weeks.

He undertook timber-getting pursuits for a time, after which he entered into the hotel-keeping business in 1885 on the Kilkivan line, and later on the Blackall Range, when the railway line from Brisbane to Gympie was under construction.

He married Catherine Elizabeth O'Leary on 14 January 1887 in Queensland, Australia. ^[1]

In 1896 he selected land in the Burnett district near Degilbo, where he followed dairying pursuits. Catherine passed away on 10 October 1916. He continued dairying until 1920, when he again entered the hotel-keeping business, which he followed in various places until 1933.

After that time he resided in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

He passed away on 20 April 1941 at Brisbane General Hospital, Herston, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. ^[2]

There passed away in the General Hospital, Brisbane, on April 20, Mr. Patrick Lowry. The late Mr. Lowry was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, in 1854 and came to Australia in 1882 in the sailing ship, Western Monarch landing in Maryborough on August 9, of that year, after a voyage lasting 17 weeks. The deceased followed timber-getting pursuits for a time after which he entered into the hotel-keeping business in 1885 on the Kilkivan line, and later on the Blackall Range, when the railway line from Brisbane to Gympie was under construction. In 1896 he selected land in the Burnett district near Degilbo, where he followed dairying pursuits till 1920, when he again entered the hotel-keeping business, which be followed in various places till 1933. Since which time he had resided in Brisbane. The late Mr. Lowry was predeceased by his wife 25 years ago. The late Mrs. Lowry. who before her marriage was Miss Catherine O'Leary, was a daughter of Mr. William O'Leary, after whom a well-known crossing on the Mary River was named. The late Mr. Lowry is survived by three sons and two daughters, Ambrose and Jack (Brisbane). Thomas (Childers), Mrs. W. Darmody (Bald Hills) and Miss Elder Lowry (Brisbane), also 15 grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs L. Gates, predeceased him 12 years ago.
