John was born on 28th January 1827, in Malmsbury, Wiltshire, England, the son of Thomas Luce and his wife Susanna. [1] [2]
John joined the Royal Navy in 1840 and was present at the bombardment of Acre that year. He commanded the 'Lynx' at Sebastopol (1854), visited Dahomey (1862), and was senior naval officer in the Bight of Africa engaged in the suppression of the slave trade. As captain of the `Esk' he came to NZ during the land wars, 1865-1867. [3]
John married Clara Warburton on 28th August 1858 at Salisbury, WIltshire. [4]
He rose to the rank of Captain. He died at Crocker Hill, Chichester, Sussex, England on 12th November 1869. [5] [2]
