Biography

Elna Mårtensson was the daughter of Marten Esbjornsson and Pernilla Akesdotter, born on 4 Nov 1846 in Annelöv, Skåne County, Sweden.^[1][2]

Elna was married to Anders Holmquist about 1872, and they lived in Bjuv, Skåne County, until after the birth of their eldest child. They lived in Norra Vram Parish after 1875.^[3][4]

Anders Holmquist and Elna Mårtensson had the following children:

• Gerda Elna (Holmqvist) Rasmussen (b. 1874)
• Estrid Svedenborg (1876–1890)
• Arvid William Holmquist (1880–1962)
• Julia Holmqvist (1885–1885)

Elna died on 7 Dec 1915 in Södra Vrams, Malmöhus county, Sweden.^[5]

Research Notes

Last Name at Birth: normally, Elna's LNAB should be rendered as "Mårtensdotter" - but most of the records that provide her surname use "Mårtensson" instead. Her husband's family had already adopted a family surname (Holmqvist), and it appears that her father decided to adopt "Mårtensson" as a surname.

As evidence of this, records for Elna and her sisters, Anna and Hanna, from Sweden, Select Baptisms, 1611-1909^[6] show them using "Martensson" as the surname:
