James MacDonald was born before 1700, son of Ranald MacDonald (<1650–1725) and Margaret Cameron (<1670– ).

James held a commission in the Princes Army, he was taken prisoner but later escaped and possibly fled to America. He was expressly excepted from the General Pardon in 1747.
