After schooling in England and in France, John was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at Paris in May 1825. He did five years of missionary work in Glasgow after ordination. He departed Glasgow in 1830 with 206 Scottish and Irish tenants for his family's feudal estate on Prince Edward Island lots 35 and 36. While serving as a priest on Prince Edward Island, he also acted as the landlord for his estate. His responsibilities in the latter capacity antagonized his parishioners until he was forced to leave Prince Edward Island in 1844. After teaching in Quebec, he returned to England where he died in 1874.
