Biography

Garrett was born in 1900. He was the son of Garrett Macey and Grace Quinn. He was born and spent his entire life working and living on the land in the Pallamallawa area.

His father Garrett was well known in the area for his innovative and successful approach to wheat farming - particularly with the use of machinery. His father was also well know for riotous behaviour, often while in the company of his sons.

Young Garrett was married to Thelma Adelaide Stevens, a young lady born in the nearby large town of Moree. They were married in 1928 at Moree.

Later that year they had their first child, Lila Mary Macey.

Their first son, Aubrey David Macey was born not long after in 1930.

Jeffrey Francis was born in 1933, Garrett was now 33 years of age with a growing family.

Daughter Helena arrived in 1935 with Ivan being born in 1938. 1938 was the year Garrett's brother William died, aged only 31. It must have been a shock to all of the Macey family to lose him so young.

Garrett & Thelma's last child was born in 1940 - Nola.

Shockingly, in 1949 his 11 year old son Ivan died while his parents were away from the house for a day. Known as a practical joker, Ivan had been seen earlier that day by his sister Helena with a bottle of poison by his bed. He assured his sister it was only there to frighten her. Later in the day Ivan was found by an aunt who had come to check on the children. He was lying outside and turning blue. He told her "I've taken poison. Let me die."

A coroner's inquest found that Ivan had died of strychnine poisoning. The police advised the coroner that he was a normal healthy boy who was well cared for and loved. The coroner found that it was death by misadventure, being impossible to tell whether he had poisoned himself by accident or had killed himself.

Two years later, Garrett's father was killed in a tragic motor accident in Singleton. The vehicle was being driven by Garrett's son Aubrey, with Aubrey's wife and baby son also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. It appears the steering locked while on the bridge, causing it to plunge over the side after removing 5 bridge panels. Garrett senior, was killed outright while Aubrey, his wife and son were all injured. Fortunately Aubrey and his family all recovered from their injuries. A coroner ruled that the death of Garrett senior was an accidental death, due to a skull fracture received during the accident.

In 1956, 5 years after his father's death, Garrett lost his mother.

His youngest daughter Nola was married in 1957 and a few years after his son Jeffrey Francis married as well.

Garrett passed away in 1971. He was survived by his wife Thelma, and his children Lila, Aubrey, Jeffery, Helena and Nola.
