The reference to Singapore / India / Straits Settlements as place of birth comes from her christening records on Family Search. It is interesting to note that she was christened in India and so this is my thinking:
The Straits Settlements is the area around the Straits of Malacca and in 1826 it included Penang / Singapore / Malacca and Dindings and it was administered by the British East India Company out of India with Singapore being the official centre for the Straits. In 1837 the Indian rupeee was made its official currency so the political / business relationship between India and the Straits was very close. Alice's father worked for the Oriental Bank Corporation in India. The bank was founded in 1842 in Bombay India and quickly became the largest trading bank in the region. It opened a branch in Singapore in 1846. Alice's parents married in Bombay India in 1852. According to her brother's obituary the family left India to escape the dangers of the Indian Mutiny / Rebellion (1857-58) and moved to Singapore where their father continued to work for the bank. Alice's brother was born in Bombay in 1863 and by 1873 the family were back in London when her father died. I haven't found any information on when they returned to London. On 28/6/1882 Alice arrived in Western Australia from London on the Chiselhurst with her three siblings Louise, Richard and Alexander.
