Mary was born in Lower Walton, Cheshire. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Maddock and was christened at Daresbury, Cheshire on 19th April, 1929[1]
Mary married James Stubbs on 29th July 1847 at All Saints Church, Runcorn, Cheshire. The couple were both living at Norton, Cheshire. James' father was a Farmer also called James and Mary's father was a Labourer called Joseph. Witnesses to the wedding were John and Elizabeth Moss.[2]
In 1851 James and Mary were living in Appleton with 2 year old daughter, Ann. James was described as a 28 year old Agricultural Labourer from Middlewich, Cheshire and Mary was aged 22 from Walton, which was also Ann's birthplace.[3]
By 1861 the family were living in Waste Lane, Thelwall Cheshire. James was still an Agricultural Labourer but they now had 6 children. 8 year old Mary was born in Appleton but all the younger children were born in Thelwall, suggesting the family had moved around 1853By 1861 the family were living in Waste Lane, Thelwall Cheshire. James was still an Agricultural Labourer but they now had 6 children. 8 year old Mary was born in Appleton but all the younger children were born in Thelwall, suggesting the family had moved around 1853[4]
The 1871 census described James' birthplace as Lostock Hall. Fifteen year old Joseph was still living at home with his parents, but all the other surviving older children had left home and the other five children at home had all been born since the previous census[5]
In 1881 the family was living at Highfields, Waste Lane, Thelwall and James was described as a non domestic gardener. Highfields was the home of the Rylands family and it seems likely that the Stubbs were living on the estate and James was employed by Thomas Glazebrook Rylands. It is possible that the three sons remaining at home were also working for the Rylands.[6]
James died on 5th March 1885 and was buried at All Saints Church Thelwall on the 7th March in a grave with 2 of his young daughters Elizabeth and Ellen [7]
In 1891 Mary was described as the head of her household, a 62 year old Widow living in Waste Lane Thelwall, her children, Joseph, Edward, Ellen and Henry were still living with her.[8]
Ten years later, in 1901 Mary was still living in Waste Lane, Thelwall, she was described as a widow living on her own means, but now her son Edward, a Market Gardener, was described as head of the household and his family and son Joseph is also residents[9]
Mary died on 19th February and was buried with her husband and duaghters as All Saints Church on 23rd February.[10]
