Biography
Lavens was born 29 May 1872. [1] He is the son of James Mageean and Margaret Graham. He died 13 October 1941 in Groote Schuur Hospital, Observatory, Cape District, South Africa. [2][3] He had been a dairy farmer. [2] Lavens was married to Robina Catherine Corkill in 1926. [4]
in 1896 Lavens was a Sergeant Major in the Bechuanaland Police according to 1896 article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Sunday 8 march 1896[5]
Lavens originally left Belfast in February 1892. He, like the majority of Jameson's followers, is young, being only in his twenty-thrid year.
Lavens was a member of the Jameson Raiders that failed against the South African Republic known as the transvaal under Leander Starr Jameson[6]
Lavens fought in the Boer war. he signed up on 5 Dec 1900 for the 1st batallion for Kitchener's Fighting Scouts until 21 Jan 1901 and then transferred to the 2nd Batallion on 24 Jan 1901.[7]1st image of letter M.
