Note: Mary was born in 1811 in (Dublin or Cork?) Ireland when she was only 16 years old her occupation was said to be Nurse girl in Dublin. She was trialled for picking pockets in 1827 and sentenced to transportation for 7 years. She arrived in the colony onboard the ship "Edward I" in 1829. Her convict assignment was said 'disposed of' to Geo. Rankin of Bathurst, on arrival on the Edward. Mary Mahoney of the 'Edward' was given an indulgence in 1832 when she was given permission to marry Richard Wellington in 1832 - as at this stage Mary was still a convict whilst Richard had served his term of servitude. Not all of those who were granted permission to marry did so. There was a marriage of Mary Mackhoney to Richard Wellington in 1832 but not sure if this is her there doesnt seem to be any children born to them. Perhaps they split and she then married James. She married James Gimbert (another convict) on 28 April 1837 at St. Mary's Church Sydney and had 14 children. After all this hardship no wonder she turned to alcohol (see story of her death).
Three years after her Husband James died, when she was only 58 she fell from a 3rd storey window of a Boarding House (167 Sussex Street, near Market Street Sydney) and died of head injuries. The inquest found that she had fallen whilst drunk, and witnesses say she had been drunk, sitting in the street gutter and laying in the Boarding House hallway for most of the day. Someone picked her up and escorted her to the kitchen, but the owner took her off to her room because she was using foul language. She was only in her room for around 15 minutes before she fell. Her daughter, whom hadn't seen her for over six months identified the body.
Mary was born about 1811. She passed away about 1874.
Arrived Sydney Cove on Convict ship "Edward" sentenced for 7 years
