Biography

James Makin was born on 16 July 1819 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. He was the illegitimate son of William Shaw and Ann Makin. He was christened on 22 Aug 1819 at St Michael and All Angels Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. His mother's address was recorded as Newton.

James married Anne Garbet on 23 Jul 1845 at All Saints Church in Rainford, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and living in Windle, and neither had been married before. James was a husbandman. Their fathers were named as William Shaw (husbandman) and John Garbet (husbandman). The witnesses were Samuel Brown and Mary Garbet. Ann's sister Mary had married a Samuel Brown in 1843, so it seems safe to assume he is her brother-in-law; probably Mary Garbet is the wife of Ann's brother Thomas, as her sister Mary would have been Mary Brown.

Ann died in 1862, aged 38.

James married Alice (Harrison) Butterworth on 29 Nov 1863 at St Peter's Church in Parr, St Helens. Both were above age (21 or more) and widowed, and living in Parr. James was a miner. Their fathers were named as William Makin (labourer) and Robert Harrison (labourer). The witnesses were Joshua Leigh and Mary Millington.

Their son James Makin was born on 23 Mar 1864. He was christened on 24 Apr 1864 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and his father's occupation as miner.

James died in 1880, aged 58 (according to the death registration) or 60 (according to the burial record). He was buried on 11 Jan 1880 at St Peter's Church in Parr. His address was given as Parr.
