Biography

Wikidata: Item Q143489, en:Wikipedia help.gif - Founder-manager of Celtic (Glasgow Celtic Football Club)

Willie was the first manager of Celtic Football Club, and one of the most successful managers in Scottish football history. During his managerial tenure, Willie led Celtic to thirty major trophies (16 league championships and 14 Scottish Cups) in forty-three consecutive years as manager. Fans still sing his name to this day.

His playing career was less spectacular, 70 appearances for Celtic as a half back from 1888-1897, and one appearance for Manchester City. He played twice for the Scotland national team but as an Irish-born son of an Irish father and Canadian mother, there was concern over his eligibility and he was not selected again.[1]

William was born in 1868. He was the son of Thomas Maley and Mary Ann Montgomery. He was born in Newry Barracks, County Down where his father, a member of the Royal North British Fusiliers was stationed, but he was raised in Cathcart, Renfrewshire on the outskirts of Glasgow, where his father moved after his honourable discharge from the army.

In the 1881 census, William and his family were living in Argyle Place, Cathcart, Renfrew, Scotland.

  • Helen Mary Maley 1900-
  • James Joseph Maley 1902- (uncertain)
  • Mary Montgomery Maley 1903-

He passed away in 1958 and was buried at Cathcart Cemetery, East Renfrewshire.
