Biography

Randal Malin was born to Joseph Malin and Lydia Ashbridge on 13 November 1790 in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. His birth was recorded in the Quaker records at Goshen Monthly Meeting.[1]

On 21 March 1851, his sister Mary Malin directed that her will was to give him four pairs of linen sheets marked with two of them, J.R.M. and 12 silver tea tongs marked, J.M. and four large silver tablespoons marked J.L.M. to be after his decease given to Joseph & Lydia A. Malin. Also, her will was to divide the reversion between her nephew Joseph A. Malin and her brother Randal Malin. She appointed Randal Malin to be the executor of her estate. The probate court of Chester County approved him as her executor and gave him the letters to administer the estate of his sister Mary Malin on 7 August 1860.[2]

On 26 June 1860, Randal Malin, age 69, retired farmer, born in Pennsylvania, was enumerated as the head of the household, and his residence was in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The value of his real estate was $12,480, and the value of his personal estate was $470. Also in his household were Mary Malin, age 78, born in Pennsylvania, with the value of $400 of her personal estate, Rebecca Malin, age 33, born in Pennsylvania, Edward H. Hibbard, age 9, born in Pennsylvania, attending to school, Amy M. Hibbard, age 6, born in Pennsylvania, attending to school, Hannah Brown, age 20, domestic, born in Pennsylvania, Margaretta Smith, age 20, domestic, born in Pennsylvania, attending to school, Helen Mars, age 16, born in Pennsylvania, attending to school and Edward Johnson, age 16, born in Pennsylvania.[3]

Randal Malin, age 71, died on 19 August 1861 at his home residence in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. His death was recorded in the Quaker records of Goshen Monthly Meeting.[4]

Randal Malin was mentioned in the Quaker records of Whiteland Preparative Meeting, and it discussed the appointment of Randal Malin and Enos Eldridge to have the graveyard wall repaired, but on the consequence of the death of Randal Malin sometime before 21 August 1861 since the last meeting, but he did not complete the repair, so Isaac Hall was added to the committee on repairs about the graveyard wall.[5]

Randal Malin signed his will on 7 May 1861 before he died on 19 August 1861, and his will was proved on 26 August 1861 at the probate court in Chester County, Pennsylvania.[6]

"I Randall Malin of the Township of East Whiteland in the County of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, being of sound disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows: 1. I direct my Executor herein after appointed to pay all my just debts, and funeral expenses as soon as conveniently can be done after my decease, 2. I give and bequeath to my nephew George Malin my Eight day Clock, to my nephew Joseph Malin my desk and book case, and to my nephew Caleb Malin my Secretary. 3. I direct my Executor to sell either at public or private sale, all my Real Estate, and to convey the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof in fee simple; and also to sell all my personal chattels not herein bequeathed, for the best price that can reasonably be obtained therefor; and apply the proceeds of said sales to the payment of the legacies herein after bequeathed. 4. I give and bequeath to my niece Rebecca T. Malin the sum of three thousand dollars. 5. I give and bequeath to my nephew Richard M. Thomas, and my niece Lydia Townsend, each the sum of two hundred dollars. 6. I give and bequeath to Edward, and Amy, children of Edward H. and Mary Hibberd, each the sum of three hundred dollars. 7. To Anna Thomas, who resided with me some years. I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars. 8. To the two children of Moses Willing (colored man) I give and bequeath the sum of fifty dollars to be divided equally between them. 9. I give and bequeath to my nephew Joseph Malin and Caleb Malin; and my nieces Rebecca T. Malin and Lydia Hibberd all the residence of my Estate, to be divided among them in equal shares. And lastly, I hereby appoint my nephew Joseph Malin Executor of this will and testament. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the seventh day of the fifth month A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty one. Randal Malin (seal)

Signed sealed published and declared by Randal Malin the testator as, and for his last will and testament in the presence of Francis James, Walter Hibbard.

West Chester August 26th 1861 Then personally appeared Francis James and Walter Hibbard, who are their solemn affirmations respectively did say that they were personally present and did see and hear Randal Malin the testator in the foregoing instrument of writing named sign seal publish pronounce and declare the same ad and for his last will and testament and that at the time of so doing he was of a sound and well disposing mind and memory to the best of their knowledge and belief. Affirmed before me. C.L. Seal Regr.

Be it remembered that on the twenty sixth day of August A.D. 1861 the last will and testament of Randal Malin deceased, was prove and approved in due form of law, and Letters Testamentary thereon were duly granted to Joseph A. Malin who was affirmed well and truly to administer the goods and chattels rights and credits of said deceased according to law, also diligently and faithfully regard and well and truly comply with the provision of the law relating to collateral inheritances.
