Close of business

On Friday, 28 February 1902, Holymoor Mills closed. From Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald, Saturday, 1 March 1902:[36]

THE CLOSING OF HOLYMOOR MILLS.
The Late Business of Messrs. S. Manlove
and Sons Ceases.
Interesting Particulars Concerning Belper
and Holymoor Mills.
Yesterday (Friday) saw the closing of an industry in the neighbourhood of Chesterfield, with whose welfare was wrapped the prosperity of the inhabitants of the little village Holymoorside. For years the Holymoorside Mills have been carried on by the Manlove family, and have given employment to numbers of men, women and boys the village in which they were situated, and in Brampton. Walton, and district, and their closure will inflict some hardship on the district in general.
The business was founded in 1829 by the late Mr Simeon Manlove, by whom the mills were rebuilt and considerably enlarged. The nature of their manufacture was sewing cotton, and with an excellent water supply from the river Hipper, which rises above the Cathole, a prosperous business soon sprang up. The building, prior to Mr Manlove inaugurating the cotton manufactory belonged to a Cook, and were used for wood and bobbin turning.
A large and important business was transacted from the Holymoorside Mills by Mr Simeon Manlove, and later by his sons, Ernest Manlove, Mr W. M. Manlove, and Mr Outram [sic] Manlove. The speciality of the firm was the manufacture of sewing cotton, and at one period in their history some 500 hands were employed the two mills Holvmoorside and Belper.
The relationship of the firm and their workpeople has always been of the most harmonius [sic] character, and no stoppages have ever occurred owing to strikes or disputes. The greatest interest has been taken by the members of the firm in the welfare of their employees and the village as a whole, and prior to the formation of a School Board, the company erected a school in the village and a Working Men's Institute. The former was eventually handed over to the School Board on the formation of that body. The company also rendered great assistance in obtaining an adequate water supply for the use of the inhabitants of the village, and the individual members of the firm were chiefly responsible for the erection of the Congregational Chapel.
In 1875 Messrs Manlove and Sons purchased the old flour mill in Belper, known the New Mill, from the bankers of firm into whose hands it had passed through the misfortunes which occasionally overtake the best intentioned companies. Prior to the advent of Messrs Manlove, the substantial stone building in Bridge Street was used as a flour mill and bakery. The owners were Messrs Nicholson and Smith, who had expended large sums in making the latest improvements and fitting the premises with modern machinery for producing flour and baking by steam.
They first introduced into Belper, what was known as the "box" loaf, but the experiment did not pay, and the large amount of capital sung [sic] in the business resulted in misfortune overtaking the firm. After Messrs Manlove entered into ownership of the two mills—which are in the form of a cross, the generating power for the machinery being placed in the centre—the whole of the flour and baking machinery and apparatus was taken out and disposed of and new and improved machinery laid down for twisting. We believe one of the chief persons who was connected with the introduction of Messrs Manlove to Belper was Rev F. Knowles, the esteemed pastor of the Congregational Chapel there. The idea of starting a factory, it is stated, originated in a casual remark made by Mr Knowles to one of the partners of the firm, and from this sprang the large business, which for many years spelt prosperity and happiness to many of Belper's inhabitants....[12]
