Joseph Manners was born in the village of Brancepeth on 13 October 1878 and he was the fifth son of John Manners and Sarah Maude.[1]
On the 1881 census, Joseph, aged 3 years, is living at 3 Maple Cottage, Brancepeth, with his parents and siblings: Elizabeth (15 years), Thomas (13 years), John (11 years), Robert (9 years), Sarah (6 years), Edward (4 years) and Maud (11 months). Her grandfather, William Maude, a retired engineer, is also living with them.[2]
On the 1891 census, Joseph, aged 12 years, is living at 55 New Row, Stockley, with his widowed mother and siblings: John (21 years), Robert (19 years), Sarah (16 years), Edward (14 years), and Maud (10 years). John is a colliery fireman, while Robert and Edward are general labourers. His grandfather, William Maude, is also still with them.[3]
Joseph married Caroline Jibson in Pocklington, Yorkshire, in 1900 and they had two children.[4]

On the 1901 census, Joseph ,a bricklayer. and Caroline are living at 22 Barron St, Darlington. They have no children yet.[5]
On the 1911 census, Joseph, a bricklayer, and Caroline. are living at 17 Coronation St, Darlington. The record shows the couple have been married for ten years and have one child. Their son, Richard Bernard Manners, born in 1901, does not appear on the 1911 census with them.[6]
On the 1939 Register, Joseph, a foreman bricklayer, and Caroline are living at 130 High Northgate, Darlington.[7]
