Biography

William was born c1290

1308/9 John Person of Sudbyry, pl. William de Marny and Katharine his wife, def. A moiety of the manor of Leyre Marny. Def. and the heirs of William to hold of the chief lords. [1]

In 1318, William de Marny , and Katharine his wife, and their son Robert, joined in conveying, by fine, the manor of Layer Marney, with appertenances, and the Avowson of the Church, to Robert de Bryche who reconveyed them to William and Katharine for their lives, remainder to their son Robert, and the heirs male of his body; and in failure of such, to the right heirs of William [2]

1322 Roger de Berners and William de Marny, to raise 700 men in Essex and Hertford, excepting the towns of Colecestre and St. Albans for the Scotch expedition and to conduct them to the king at Newcastle on Tyne by the octaves of Holy Trinity.[3]

Berners and Marny later wrote to the king to say they have done this, buying cloth for the coats and buying armour, but have only received money from the counties for the vestments, and nothing for their armour or expenses. They requested that the king would not wish them to be the loser for their good deed.[4]

Henry III granted a license to his grandfather William Marny 12th October 1264 to 'impark (Enclose) his wood at Lyre within the metes of the Forest of Essex and later in 1329, he had license himself to alienate thirty acres of land and the advowson of the Church of Leyremarny to three Chaplains to celebrate Divine Service there, daily, for the soul of the said William and the souls of his ancestors and of his heirs, which land and advowson were parcel of his manor of Leyremarny, which he held of the Bishop of London as of the Castle of Stortford, by the service of two suits at the court of the said Bishop in the said castle to Robert de Marny his son.
