Biography

Annie Marsh was born October 13th 1875 in Sutton. She was the daughter of Abraham Marsh and Jane (Morris) Marsh. She was christened on November 14th 1875 at St Anne's Church in Sutton (Catholic). Her godmother was Johana (in Latin - probably Jane or Joan) Crow.

By April 3rd 1881, the family were living in Sutton Road, Sutton. Annie's father was working as a greengrocer. The household included five children - John (aged 12), Mary Ellen (10), James (8), Annie (5), and Cecilia (3).

Annie's father died on October 10th 1882, and was buried at St Anne's on the 15th. His address was given as Junction Rd, Sutton.

Cecelia died in September 1884.

By April 5th 1891, Annie's mother was living in Junction Lane, Sutton. She was working as a greengrocer, with her son James assisting. John had left home, so only Mary Ellen, James and Annie were still with her.

Annie married Charles Green on October 18th 1897 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton (Anglican). She was 22, he was 28. It was a first marriage for both. Annie's address was 9 Junction Lane, Sutton, and Charles' was 14 Station Road, Sutton. Their fathers (both dead) were Abraham Marsh, Grocer, and Robert Green, Glasscutter. The witnesses were Thomas Smart and Mary Green.

On November 23rd 1898, Charles and Annie's only child, Mildred, was born. She was christened at St Anne's, as a Catholic.

By March 31st 1901, Charles and Annie had set up house together near Annie's family, in Junction Lane, Sutton. Charles was working as a collier, and they had a two-year-old daughter Mildred, who got recorded with both her parents and her maternal grandmother in the 1901 census.

Annie's mother died in November 1908.

By April 2nd 1911, Charles had died, and Annie and Mildred were boarding with Annie's sister Mary Ellen, who had taken over the family greengrocer's shop. Annie was supporting herself by working as a charwoman (ie a cleaner). Mildred, at 12, was still in school.

Research Notes

Birth registration: probably not registered; I can’t find her birth reg. in Prescot, or anywhere within 2 years with mother MORRIS; for Dec q 1875 there’s an Ann M b. Wigan 8c 46 and an Annie M b. Warrington 8c 202 but mother's name not a match in either case[1]

No death registration in St Helens area for Charles. Did he run off rather than die perhaps? Was religion maybe a bone of contention, with Annie being from a Catholic family and having had Mildred christened as a Catholic, but the wedding being in an Anglican church, presumably because Charles was Anglican?
