Biography

George was born in England, United Kingdom about 1843. He is the son of Joshua Marshman. He passed away in Dublin, South Australia during 1913.

George arrived in South Australia on 16 July 1848 with his parents on the vessel Sibella.[1]

George married Mary Ann Vicary in Gawler, South Australia on 19 February 1863.[2]

George died in Dublin, South Australia on 22 January 1913 at the age of 70 years.[3] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Journal, on 23 January 1913:[4]

MARSHMAN—On the 22nd January, suddenly, George Marshman, J.P., Mallala, in his 70th year. At rest.

George was buried at the Mallala Cemetery in Mallala, South Australia on 24 January 1913.[5]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser, on 23 January 1913:[6]

Mr. G. Marshman had died suddenly. Mr. Marshman had been well known in the district for over 40 years. He had occupied the position of chairman of the district council of Grace continuously for the last 20 years. He was one of the members appointed by the Governor to the first District Council of Grace in 1874. He had been an active member of the community in all local matters, and had been chairman of the institute for a number of years and chairman of the vigilance committee. He was also an active temperance worker. He had acted as secretary of the local branch of I.O. Rechabites for the last 25 years, in addition to holding offices prior to this as C.R. and D.C.R. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church. He was president of the Mallala branch of the Liberal Union from its inception, and an active worker in the cause. He was president of the Local Government Association, a justice of the peace for more than 30 years, and was universally esteemed.
