Biography

John 'Cap' Martin descended from the Pilgrim Fathers of Massachusetts on both his mother and father's sides.

Among the pioneer and early citizens of Minneapolis whose efforts and influence on the development of the city, and on the general progress of the State of Minnesota, have been most marked - must always be counted Captain John Martin... he is a man of Minnesota in the front rank...The two factors most potent in the pt prosperity of Minnesota have been the lumber and milling interests, and in their development John Martin has been especially prominent and active. - The Book of Minnesota, 1903 published by the Pioneer Press

John was one of the first stockholders in the Soo Line and Minneapolis & St. Louis railroads, vice president of the St. Louis, and Soo Line and was a director of the First National Bank.
