Biography

Mary Ann Martin was born in about 1824 in Ulverston, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Robert Martin, a gardener, and his wife Agnes. Mary Ann's birthplace was given as Waterloo in one census, which is in Sefton where her family were living in 1841.

Mary married James Travers or Traverse on 25 Dec 1845 at St Bride's Church in Toxteth, Lancashire. Neither had been married before, and both were of full age (21 or more). James was a joiner living on Brownlow Hill; Mary was living in Minshull Street. Their fathers were named as Edward Traverse (joiner) and Robert Martin (gardner). The witnesses were Robert Martin and Agnes Martin, Mary's parents.
