James was born 13 Dec 1920 at Clovis, California.[1] He was the youngest of nine children born to Arthur Wesley Martin and Augusta ("Gussie") Sophronia Welborn. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three years during World War II. He married Virginia Hope Nelson on 3 May 1947 at San Rafael, California. Jim was an aircraft maintenance technician for 10 years at the Hamilton Air Force Base. He left that to work as a carpenter for several years. With the help of his brother, he built a pumice block home in San Rafael and a stucco home in Fresno. When his youngest child was 2 years old, he fractured his back when a block broke loose from a building on which he was working. After his recovery, he returned to Fresno State College to complete courses interrupted by World War II. He graduated from Fresno State University in 1969 with a teaching degree in Industrial Arts. Jim taught in Fresno junior and senior high schools until his retirement in 1979. He loved to travel and visited all 50 states and 40 countries. He was a president of the Fresno Joggers and participated in the World Senior Games in Sweden, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. Jim suffered a stroke after taking Vioxx and died on 26 May 2004 in Fresno.[2] Vioxx was removed from shelves in September of that year.
