Biography

William Martin was born in Ireland about 1787.

His first son was born in County Antrim in 1813, then they emmigrated to Ontario, Canada where his next four children were born.

His death was not registered but is believed to have died between 1865 and 1870. His will was registered later in 1870.

Transcript Abstract: THOMAS MARTIN came to California in 1875, purchased land in Fresno County, four miles west of Selma, 1882, took up his residence here 1883, and has made it his home ever since. Upon his fine six hundred and sixty acre ranch Mr. Martin is engaged in stock-raising and general farm pursuits, Born May 7, 1852 in Ontario, Canada to Hugh and Margaret (Kirkwood) Martin, a well-known family. Hugh Martin was a native of Ireland and Margaret Kirkwood, a native of Canada (still living, age 85, in 1909). When twelve years old, Hugh Martin accompanied his father, William Martin, from Ireland to Canada, and settled in Ontario, where he spent the rest of his life. When grown to manhood, Hugh Martin followed the occupation of teaching for a number of years, afterward turning his attention to farm pursuits in the neighborhood of Campwell [sic], should be Kemptville]l, and it was there that he died at the age of seventy. Ten children were born to him and his wife as follows: Robert (deceased) William (deceased) John (resident of Dakota) Mary Jane (deceased) Joseph (deceased) Thomas George, a contractor and builder of Yolo County, Cal.; Maggie, a resident of Canada; Hugh, also a contractor and builder, residing at Berkeley, Cal.; and Annie (deceased) Thomas married Mrs. Maud Jackson in Selma. She was a native of Missouri and had two children, Clarence and Nina, by a former marriage.
