Biography

Samuel Martinez was born on May 28, 1882 in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. He was the son of Jose Cirilo Ulibarri Martinez and Maria Adelaida Valdez. [1]

The 1885 Colorado State Census, begun on June 1st, listed Samuel, age 3, as living with his parents Jose Cirilo and Maria Adelaida and his sisters Juana Martinez, Maria Ruben Martinez, Piedad Margarita and Viviana in Conejos, Conejos, Colorado. [2]

Samuel's mother Maria Adelaide passed away on March 20, 1897 in Conejos, Conejos, Colorado.

The 1900 Federal Census, taken July 2nd, listed Samuel, age 18, as living with his father Jose Cirilo, his sisters Juana, Maria Ruben, Piedad Margarita and Maria Marina Martinez and his brothers Luis Eduardo Martinez, Manuel Salvador Martinez and Jose Bernardo Martinez in Guadalupe, Conejos, Colorado. Samuel Martinez, age 22, married first Maria E. Rodriguez, age 20, on January 9, 1905 in Conejos, Conejos, Colorado with the Rev. A. P. Brucker officiating. [4]

The marriage ended when Samuel's wife Maria passed away in 1908.

The 1910 Federal Census, taken May 12th, listed Samuel, age 26, a widow, and his son Jose Nicolas Martinez as living with his father Cirilo, his sisters Maria Ruben, Piedad Margarita and Maria Marina and his brothers Manuel Salvador and Jose Bernardo in Guadalupe, Conejos, Colorado. His occupation was listed as a laborer doing odd jobs. [5]

The 1911 Alamosa City Directory listed Samuel as a laborer and living in Conejos, Conejos, Colorado. [6]

Samuel Martinez, age 28, married second Decideria M. Romero, age 26, on November 18, 1912 in Conejos, Conejos, Colorado with the Rev. G. Massa officiating. [7]

The 1920 Federal Census, taken March 1st, listed Samuel, age 33, as living with his wife Decideria, his daughter Maria Adelaida Martinez and his sons Armando Martinez and Feliberto Martinez in Guadalupe, Conejos, Colorado. His occupation was listed as a farmer. [8]

The 1930 Federal Census, taken March 7th, listed Samuel, age 47, as living with his wife Decideria, his daughters Maria Adelaida, Julia Martinez and Consuelo "Mary" Martinez and his sons Armando, Feliberto and Cirilo Martinez in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. His occupation was listed as a garage attendant. [9]

The 1940 Federal Census, taken April 5th, listed Samuel, age 58, as living with his wife Decideria, his daughters Julia and Consuelo and his sons Feliberto and Orlando Ernesto Martinez in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. His occupation was listed as a laborer for Works Progress Administration road construction. He had not gone to school. [10]

On May 20, 1942, Samuel registered for the World War II Draft in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. He was 60 years old, born on May 20, 1882 in Conejos, Colorado and living at General Delivery in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. He was employed by Pete Salazar at Rainbow Antonito Motor Co. in Antonito, Colorado, and he listed his wide Decideria Martinez as someone who would always know his address. His height was listed as 5'-10", his weight as 120 pounds, his eye color as brown, his hair color as black and his complexion as black. [11]

The marriage ended when Samuel's wife Decideria passed away on June 2, 1940 probably in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado.

The 1950 Federal Census, taken April 19th, listed Samuel, age 69, as living with his daughters Julia and Consuelo and his son Orlando Ernesto at the 11th hose on Front Street in Antonito, Conejos, Colorado. [12]

Samuel passed away on August 18, 1968 in La Jara, Conejos, Colorado. [13] He was buried in Los Cerritos, Cemetery in Los Cerritos, Conejos, Colorado. [14] (Note: The death date on the tombstone was listed as January 18, 1969.)
