He was a bookseller persecuted due to possible implication in the 1815 coup attempt of liberal General Diaz Porlier and/or for desiring a return of the Constitution suspended by King Ferdinand VII. Jose was cited for distributing "for free alarming scribblings against His Majesty through his bookshop in a List of the Most Furious Enemies of Religion and the King in La Coruna" (Alvarez, 1986). He survived at least until Spain's brief return to constitutional rule in 1820-23, and was referred to in Antonio Miyar's Bibliografia Nacional y Estrangera in 1820, in connection with the publication of a newspaper intended to exercise oversight of judicial rulings. Miyar fell afoul of the King and was executed after the resumption of absolute rule; Jose's fate is not known" (Matthew Hovious).
