Jasper Alexander Masencup was born either December 1882 (as recorded in the 1900 Census), 19 August 1883 (as recorded on his World War I Draft Registration Card) or 19 August 1884 (as recorded on his World War II Draft Registration Card) at Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States of America. I am choosing to use the December 1882 date as it will cover the other dates. He is the son of Winston Carlis Masencup and Sarah Ann E. Faircloth.
Historical documents record Jasper as Jasper A. Masencup, Jasper Massoncup, Jasper Alexander Masencup, J.A. Masencup and Jasper Masoncup. Census records record that he had attended school, was able to read and write, worked as a motorman on a street car and a brakeman for the railroad. He is described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes, light color hair and his right [sic] is ½ inch shorter than left as recorded on his 1918 World War I Draft Registration Card. On his 1942 World War II Draft Registration Card he is described as being five feet eight inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, with gray eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion with no other physical description. He was a retired retarder operator1 for the N&W Railroad.
Jasper is recorded in the 1900 United States Census, enumerated 21 June, as Jasper A. Masencup residing in the household of his father, Winston C. Masencup, at Yadkin Township, Stokes County, North Carolina. His birthdate is enumerated as December 1882, he is 17 years old and attended school for two months. Also residing in the household are his sisters 21 year old Fannie and two year old Mamie L. and his brother 14 year old Wallas E.
He married Celia A. Adams 22 February 1905 at the home of W.M. Adams [her brother William], Tobaccoville, R.F.D. in Old Richmond Township, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Celia was born about 1879; she is the daughter of Sanford and Martha Adams. Jasper was 21 years old and Celia was 26 years old as recorded on their marriage certificate. E.H. Spease of Rural Hall, North Carolina, Ada Adams and W.M. Adams both of Tobaccoville, North Carolina were witnesses to their marriage by F.W. Grabs a Moravian. This writer does not know if they had any children.
Jasper is recorded in the 1910 United States Census, enumerated 20 April, as Jasper Massoncup residing in the household of his brother-in-law, William L. Hunter, and sister Fannie Hunter, at 168 Gray Street in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Commonwealth of Virginia. He 27 years old, single and working as a Motor man for a Street Car. Also residing in the household are his nieces seven year old Erma, four year old Ota and four month old Virginia, his brother 24 year old Wallace and 20 year old sister Mamie.
He was a widow when he married Ollie Montague Allen 06 November 1917 at Danville (Independent City), Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. She is the daughter of Henry and Ella Allen. This writer does not know if they had any children.
He registered for the World War I Draft 11 September 1918 at Roanoke, Commonwealth of Virginia. He and Ollie are residing at 809 13th Street S.W., Roanoke, Commonwealth of Virginia and he is employed at N&W Railway Roanoke Terminal, Roanoke, Commonwealth of Virginia.
Jasper is recorded in the 1920 United States Federal Census, enumerated 10 January, as Jasper Masoncup head of household renting a house at 1125 Chapman Avenue, Roanoke, Highland Ward, Roanoke County, Commonwealth of Virginia. He is 36 years old and working as a Brakeman for the Railroad. Also residing in the household is his wife Ollie.
He registered for the World War II Draft 27 April 1942 at Roanoke, Commonwealth of Virginia. He and Ollie are residing at 826 13th St., S.W. Roanoke, Commonwealth of Virginia and he is employed at N&W Railway Roanoke Terminal in Roanoke, Virginia.
Jasper died 10 August 1962 at Roanoke (an independent city), Commonwealth of Virginia. He is buried at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Roanoke City, Commonwealth of Virginia.
