John Matthewman was born on 28 April 1879 in Leeds, Yorkshire[1]. In 1911 he was running his own business Letterpress printer and living at 18 Abyssinia Terrace Leeds with his wife Matilda (born Wardman) and his son Sydney[2] In 1921 he was living at 52 Bel Vue Road, Leeds with his wife Matilda and two sons Sydney and Gilbert. He was still running his Letterpress business which was at 34 Burley Road, Leeds.[3] In 1939 he was still living at 52 Bellevue Road with Matilda and Gilbert and was still a Letterpress printer.[4] He died on 16 January 1946 at 123 Beckett Street, Leeds (although he is still described as of 52 Belle View Road). He left £1,246 and his widow, Matilda was in charge of his estate.[5]
